Developing Medicine was formed in Latin America in 2021 to assist refugees migrating from South America to Central America, particularly through the area known as the Darién Gap. Up to the beginning of 2025, more than 1 million people made this journey, including more than 100,000 children. Developing Medicine was privileged to help some of these people by providing them medical resources, medical assistance, food and other forms of support.
As of 2026, the situation is in flux because of changes to the way in which asylum claims are treated within relevant jurisdictions. However, the underlying need for medical support and the development of medical institutions in the region remains. Developing Medicine will therefore continue our work in this area through our grants programme and by providing free digital medical resources in Spanish, Portuguese and French.
In 2026, we are also pleased to have started our operation in Ethiopia. In particular, we have been privileged to support the development of the Nutritionally Integrated Food Assisting Product (NIFAP) through Arba Minch Faculty of Medicine in Ethiopia. You can find full details of the NIFAP grants, including information about the project team, on our grants page. The photos below were taken at the NIFAP product launch in March 2026.
We have worked on the ground in Latin America since 2021. Our work has focused upon assisting people escaping poverty and violence in the border regions of Colombia, Venezuela and the Darién Gap. See our Special Reports on the links below to learn more.
