From 2021 to 2025, more than one million people walked from South America into Central America seeking relief and refuge from poverty and violence. Most walked from Venezuela, Haiti, Ecuador or Colombia. At least 100,000 children made the journey. It was common to see whole families and pregnant women taking the path. However, the journey was notoriously dangerous, particularly through the area known as the Darién Gap between Colombia and Panama. Developing Medicine was privileged to help some of these people by providing medical resources, medical assistance, food and other forms of support.
As of 2026, the situation is in flux because of changes to the way in which asylum claims are treated within relevant jurisdictions. But the underlying need for medical support and the development of medical institutions in the region remains. Developing Medicine will therefore continue our work in this area through our grants programme and by providing free digital medical resources in Spanish, Portuguese and French. If you have any questions about our work, please feel free to contact us through the Contact Us page.
We are also planning to expand our operations into Asia and Africa while at the same time maintaining our involvement in Latin America. Our expansion will involve a mission to Sri Lanka where we intend to work in rural areas in need of medical support. We are then hoping to work on the ground in Ethiopia. Again, our focus will be in rural areas that are otherwise isolated from medical assistance. These efforts will involve the provision of medical resources and medical support to complement our digital medical resources.
We have worked on the ground in Latin America since 2021. Our work has focused upon assisting people escaping poverty and violence in the border regions of Colombia, Venezuela and the Darién Gap. See our Special Reports on the links below to learn more. We are also planning to extend our work to Sri Lanka and Ethiopia in 2026.
